" A Rose by any other name... " Sharing a Rose Bouquet & Shakespeare, too! Carey's Florist - Minden, Ontario

"What's in a name? that which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet..." William Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

Really, it's no wonder this beautiful flower, coveted by gardeners and lovers alike for centuries, would inspire the Bard himself to write such beautiful prose.

Succulents - From Carey's Garden Centre & Florist - Minden, Ontario

Succulents require good draining soil and full sun. When deciding wher to plant these lovelies, make sure the the location and growing medium provides good drainage, especially if located in a low spot that might have standing water. Succulents don't like to have wet feet. Neither do I, for that matter!

At Carey's we love to create custom container plantings for our customers, including succulents, which can be used in many ways and locations of the garden. We suggest incorporating sand, gravel and pea gravel for better drainage.

Any container used for succulents should have a drainage hole or put crushed rock on the bottom before your planting medium.

Watering
After planting, water in well and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Succulents don't like to have wet feet. When you do water, water thoroughly.

Fertilizer
Most succulents don't require fertilizer. If you choose to do so, a well balanced fertilizer once a month is all they would need.

And, next Spring/Summer at Carey's, we'll be teaching workshops, showing people how to use Succulents in the garden. We've got all kinds of ideas to share, including living wreaths, container garden plantings, and drought tolerant gardening!

Top Tips From Carey's Garden Centre - Putting the #Garden to Bed

Carey’s Garden Centre’s Top Tips

-Putting the Garden to Bed -

1- Plant those Sping Bulbs! Daffodils, Crocus, Tulips, Hyacinth, and many other varieties of bulbs can be planted up until the ground freezes.
2 -Roses can be hilled by putting a cone of soil on the base of each rose bush about eight
to ten inches up the stem structure.
3 - Burlap new evergreen plantings. Not only will this insulate the evergreens, help prevent salt damage, and keep those hungry deer from decimating it, too.
4 - Bring in those clay pots! In the winter, freezing temperatures can
cause them to crack. Storing them in the garage, the garden shed or some other spot
where they will be out of the elements means they’ll last for many years to come!
5 - Weed one last time in late October to rid the garden of any perennial weeds that will overwinter, plaguing you and the garden next Spring.
6 - Leave some perennials uncut for some for winter effect. The snow sitting on the stems is beautiful. Seedheads can be left, too, as well as berries, for our winter bird and animal friends. Some foliage left in flower beds helps to insulate plants which
keep the plants in a state of dormancy during occasional periods of warmer
weather. Snow, of course, is the best insulator!
7 - Compost can be roto-tilled in to raised beds and vegetable gardens, if your soil is in great need of organic material. Clean plant material can be chopped up and dug in as well.

8 - Stay cozy and warm! Enjoy a hot chocolate while pouring over those beautiful seed catalogues. These are the things that get us gardeners through the Winter months!

9 - Visit Carey's Garden Centre and Florist year round, in person or online for tips, workshop information, and inspiration for next year.

10- At Carey's, we create beautiful floral arrangement designs for all occasions. Whether you need flowers sent locally or around the world, Carey's offers FTD service and will get it there when you need it.

Forcing Bulbs for Indoors - Garden Tips from Carey's Garden Centre - Minden

Is there anything better, during the deep, dark depths of winter, than spring flowering bulbs brightening an otherwise dull day?

Now's a good time to get going on that. Forcing bulbs is easy!

It's also easy to thank oneself, a couple of months down the road, for taking the time now to do it!

--------

Hyacinth, Tulips, Narcissus (Daffodils), Crocus, Iris reticulata, and more, are all good candidates for forcing in pots. Plant some up mpw, put them in the fridge, then pull them out in mid February, and just enjoy, knowing that Spring is just around the corner!

What's a garden without cats?
What's a garden centre without 2 cats, for that matter?
There's the mother cat, and adorable her kitten.
We've kind of adopted them, or maybe it's the other way around!
No names have been given for them yet. At Carey's, we're open to suggestions!

Aren't they sweet!?
